New fossil of giant long-necked dinosaur discovered in China

Paleontologists have identified a new species of sauropod dinosaur, Mamenchisaurus sanjiangensis, from a partial skeleton discovered near Chongqing in southwest China, a finding that sheds new light on the evolution of sauropods in East Asia. The dinosaur lived during the Early Oxfordian period of the Jurassic period, about 160 million years ago. The bones were recovered from purple-red silty mudstones in the middle part of the Upper Shaximiao Formation, a well-known fossil-bearing stratum of this area. Despite being known from only a single partial skeleton, the researchers classify M. sanjiangensis as a “divergent mamenchisaurid,” closely related to other species in

Solar versus fossil fuel-based power generation dilemma

The country has agreed to achieve a 60% share of renewable energy, but is demotivating under the influence of IPPs Islamabad: Pakistan has a solar energy potential of 40 gigawatts, according to the World Bank. This can help increase the share of solar energy to 60% in the energy mix by 2030. Historically, Pakistan has depended on fossil fuels, especially oil and natural gas, to generate electricity. However, due to advances in solar technology and increased supply, low prices have shifted the energy mix paradigm more towards renewables in recent years. Therefore, the government has developed the net metering policy,

Citizens transport 50 GW of solar power as costly fossil fuel demand shrinks

Households bear expensive LNG import costs as industries move away from high-cost fuel, but reliance on government remains After decades of dependence on imported and local fossil fuels, Pakistan is turning to cheaper and cleaner options. In FY24, shrinking energy supply and declining consumption defined Pakistan’s energy story. Weak demand and rising fuel costs are leading to a gradual shift away from dependence on fossil fuels. Economic pressures are reshaping energy use The Pakistan Energy Market Review (PEMR) 2025 by Renewables First reveals that Pakistan’s primary energy supplies fell for the second consecutive year in 24 years, while final energy

1.5 million-year-old fossil traces show that two ancient human species coexisted

An aerial view of the surface of the excavated runway in northern Kenya, with members of the research team along its perimeter, is seen in this photo released November 28, 2024. —Reuters About 1.5 million years ago, individuals of two different species of human evolutionary ancestry ran across a muddy lakeshore in northern Kenya, leaving behind crisscrossing tracks along with the tracks of antelopes, horses, wild boars, giant storks and other animals. These tracks turned into fossils that scientists have now discovered at a site called Koobi Fora, providing the first evidence that these two species – Paranthropus boisei and

Nations strike deal at COP28 to transition away from fossil fuels

DUBAI: Representatives from nearly 200 countries agreed at the COP28 climate summit on Wednesday to begin cutting global fossil fuel consumption to avoid the worst of climate change, a first-of-its-kind agreement signaling the eventual end of the oil era. The agreement reached in Dubai after two weeks of tough negotiations was intended to send a strong message to investors and policymakers that the world is united in its desire to break with fossil fuels, which scientists say is the last best hope to avert climate catastrophe. COP28 President Sultan Al Jaber called the agreement “historic” but added that its real

The new COP28 draft agreement does not have a “phase-out” of fossil fuels

DUBAI: A draft of a possible climate deal at the COP28 summit on Monday suggested a range of options countries could take to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, but omitted the “phasing out” of fossil fuels that many nations have called for. The draft will set the stage for a final round of contentious negotiations at the two-week summit in Dubai, which has revealed deep international disagreements over whether oil, gas and coal should have a place in a climate-friendly climate future. COP28 president Sultan Al Jaber urged the nearly 200 countries at the talks to redouble their efforts to finalize

OPEC pressure on fossil fuels sparks outrage at COP28

DUBAI: Negotiations over the future of fossil fuels intensified at UN climate talks on Saturday, with OPEC fending off the oil cartel’s bid to block any phase-out in the final deal. The tone has shifted between optimism and concern over the pace of the COP28 talks in Dubai, as negotiators held marathon meetings aimed at finding a compromise on the fate of oil, gas and coal. OPEC added fuel to the fire after it was revealed that Kuwaiti Secretary-General Haitham Al Ghais sent a letter to the group’s 13 members and 10 allies this week, calling on them to “preemptively
