LONDON:
Over thirty years after Sophie Lloyd’s launch for disguise as a man to participate in the then exclusively male Magic Circle, her professional and amateur magical company based in London and amateurs to restore a member.
Society, which has 1,700 members around the world, including King Charles, excluded Lloyd in 1991.
For months ago, Lloyd, with the help of a friend, had pretended to be a man called Raymond who had a bad neck.
“We had a wig, a little like Hugh Grant’s hair,” Lloyd told reporters. “We had the support … to get the strongest person and get the jaw.”
The club was not happy when Lloyd revealed her deceit. She chooses to expel her – rather than at the same time opening the membership to other women.
The Latin slogan of the Club translates as “frustrated to reveal secrets” and in 1910 kicked his first president to reveal the secrets behind the Magic Tricks.
Until the 1990s, she justified the ban on women by saying that they could not trust the magic tricks secret.
Society now has its first chair, Laura London, who wanted to contact Lloyd after a hearing for last year.
“I knew this was a story that had to be told,” London said. “He has not only recorded the imagination of American magicians. He seems to have recorded everyone’s imagination now.”
Having initially hesitated to recognize herself, Lloyd, now in the 1960s and lives in Spain, described her return as a bittersweet because the friend who helped her remove her cheating ever since died.
“I thought … Jenny would love this and I just got really emotional,” he said.
Magic Circle’s participation had changed greatly, he added.
“This was 30 years ago. People are so different (now) … Everyone was launched and fit in my day and now I looked at them and had tattoos, hoodies, trainers, piercings.” Reuters
