Why endorse minimalism as a fashion statement

LONDON:

Minimalist fashion sounds fancy, doesn’t it? Like you’ve ascended to a higher level of wardrobe brilliance. But let’s be real: it’s mostly about not tripping over your clothes and pretending you’re too sophisticated for hot pink leggings and embroidered kurta combos.

What minimalist fashion really is (or fashion minimalism depending on the mood you’re in) is the art of looking effortlessly chic without the hassle of, you know, actually trying. It’s all about clean lines, neutral colors and being able to actually see what you have in your closet.

Enter the “clean girl” aesthetic, the latest trend where looking like you just rolled out of bed involves an artfully slicked back and just the right amount of dewy skin. A rebel, right? It’s about owning fewer pieces that scream sophistication and whisper, “I don’t have to try hard to look this good.”

As someone who recently made the jump from the ‘dopamine dose’ aesthetic (which is basically an ‘anything goes’ mentality and the more color the merrier), I can attest that it was the right choice. I used to be all about bright colors and prints designed to lift the spirits. But after a while looking in the mirror becomes visually overstimulating and so I did a full eighty to become a minimalist.

How to achieve the minimalist look

Channel your inner Marie Kondo. Pull everything out and ask yourself, “Does this bring joy?” If the answer is “What was I thinking?” – it goes. Donate, sell or burn that cheetah print tee you swore you’d wear to a party that never happened. It’s time for a wardrobe exorcism.

The next step is to determine your color palette. Black, white, brown, grey, beige and navy. If Mattise used it in a painting, let it be. Think of it as the fashion version of coloring just inside the lines. Your wardrobe should look like a sophisticated grayscale movie, you get extra points if you go for the monochromatic look. If necessary, sprinkle with a little color. Soft pastels are fine. neon green it is not. If you are wearing a matching gray set, pair it with a blue or yellow dupatta. The idea is to use color as an accent, not a crutch.

Invest in quality essentials. It is better if it is classical pieces. Spend your money on things that won’t fall apart after a wash. White tees, linen sharpies (as Mahira Khan prefers) and cigarette pants that fit like a glove — these are your new best friends. Cotton, wool, silk. Consider materials that sound expensive because they are. Trust me, you’ll save money in the long run.

Moving on to the accessories. Choose a few basics that don’t scream for attention. Think of them as the supporting cast for the main stars of your wardrobe. A classic watch, a thin leather belt, a pair of stud earrings or a tennis bracelet — simple but effective. Pair your new fit with a bag that can fit your life, or at least a small dog. As for shoes, if you like the desi shalwar-kurta look, then go for sandals in a plain color, otherwise white outfits are classic.

I don’t know much about makeup, but I do know that the minimalist kind exists. People now prefer the natural look with less products and hassle-free procedures. The daily eyeliner craze? Lost. Over-the-top lips like the Kylie Jenner trend? Also dead. And if you want to achieve that no-makeup look by using tons of makeup, go for it. What matters is the end product.

Why stop at fashion?

So minimalism — it’s not just a fashion statement anymore. it’s a whole lifestyle upgrade. Imagine your life as a messy room filled with random junk you never use — except now you’re throwing away unnecessary commitments, toxic relationships, and maybe even that collection of novelty fridge magnets.

Prioritize and only commit to things that make you happy or at least don’t make you want to scream into a pillow. Because minimalism is about inner peace, use calendars and to-do lists. Apparently, being an adult means watching things other than your Netflix queue.

There is also such a thing as digital minimalism. Clean out your inbox, unfollow useless Instagram accounts, and delete apps you haven’t used since 2016. Your phone will thank you for not dying every three hours.

A minimalist home means regular absorption. Have you ever seen a hoarder’s house? Don’t be that person. But it goes further than just having a clean space, it means focusing on minimalism from a design perspective as well. Forget cozy clutter — it’s all about sharp lines and neutral tones. Invest in a simple off-white sofa and pair it with pastel detailed cushions or a throw for those colours.

Because in minimalist decorating, simplicity is not an option. it’s a lifestyle commitment to prove that less really is enough (as long as you have a good stash for the things you couldn’t bear to throw away). Pakistani actor Saba Qamar’s new home is a case in point. I have a feeling she’s a minimalist.
