Death toll tops 21,000 from Turkey-Syria quake

The death toll from the massive earthquake in Turkey and Syria kept on climbing Thursday, topping 21,000 as the first UN aid reached Syrian rebel-held zones but hopes of finding more survivors faded. The chief of the World Health Organisation said he was on his way to Syria, as bitter cold hampered the search of thousands of flattened buildings and threatened the lives of many quake victims who are without shelter and drinking water. Relatives were left scouring body bags laid out in a hospital car park in Turkey’s southern city of Antakya to search for missing relatives, an indication

United States of Hypocrisy (Opinion)

Hypocrites have the unique ability to create an illusion of being a friend, ally, or partner without revealing their true selves i.e., wolves in sheep’s clothing. President Biden, even before Russia invaded Ukraine, started calling President Putin the aggressor, which he might be and might not be, as it depends on how we see the conflict. Biden’s framing of the Ukraine crisis in the media, which owes its origin to the reckless expansion of NATO eastwards despite clear warnings of Russia against this expansion, is ‘otherising’ Russia. Moreover, the US, with the support of its so-called allies in Europe, is

What did Syria’s Assad say to Putin in Moscow?

(Transcript via the Kremlin) President of Russia Vladimir Putin: Mr President, I am glad to once again welcome you to Moscow. First of all, please accept my best wishes on your recent birthday. President of the Syrian Arab Republic Bashar al-Assad (in Russian): Spasibo. Vladimir Putin: And of course, on a personal note, congratulations on your solid performance in the presidential election. The result shows that you enjoy popular trust despite all the challenges and tragedies of the past years, which means that it is you that people view as the driver of recovery and a return to normal life. I know that you are doing a great deal along these lines, including efforts to establish a dialogue with your political opponents. I really hope that this process continues. It is only by consolidating all the forces
