PSX bounces back on renewed interest

Listen to the article KARACHI: The Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) made a strong comeback on Friday after intense selling pressure in recent days, as investors showed renewed confidence in the market’s resilience and pushed the KSE-100 over 3,000 points. Analysts attributed the rise to a combination of factors, including the government’s deliberations on the privatization of state-owned enterprises (SOEs), resolution of the issue of independent power producers’ (IPPs) capacity payments, rising exports, a rise in foreign exchange reserves and stability of the rupee. Despite pressures in the last three consecutive meetings, investors saw an opportunity in the market’s decline, caused

The ceasefire in Gaza will be renewed next week

DOHA/CAIRO: Gaza ceasefire talks in Doha broke down on Friday with negotiators meeting again next week to seek an agreement to end fighting between Israel and Hamas and free the remaining hostages, as US President Joe Biden said that “we’re not there yet.” In a joint statement, the US, Qatar and Egypt said Washington presented a new proposal based on points of agreement last week, closing loopholes in a way that could allow a deal to be quickly implemented. Mediators will continue to work on the proposal, they said. “The path is now set for this outcome, saving lives, bringing

Kenya experiences renewed protests despite overturning of president’s tax bill

NAIROBI: Protests continued in Kenya on Thursday, albeit on a smaller scale, despite President William Ruto’s decision to withdraw tax hike proposals and his promise to introduce austerity measures. Hundreds of people took to the streets of various cities across Kenya, although their numbers were significantly lower than earlier in the week. They defied appeals by Ruto and his deputy, Rigathy Gatsagua, who on Wednesday had urged them to call off the protests and enter into dialogue with the government. The protesters said they were protesting in memory of their colleagues who had been killed or injured in previous rallies.

Rahul Gandhi faces new challenges amid renewed fortunes

Once dismissed as an “empty suit”, India’s perennial prime minister-in-waiting Rahul Gandhi has emerged from his third straight election defeat with his reputation boosted and his party back from the political wilderness. But analysts are divided on whether the 54-year-old — scion of a dynasty that has already given India three prime ministers — is ready for the next battle he faces. Already the leader of the opposition to Hindu nationalist Prime Minister Narendra Modi in all but name, Gandhi now takes the official seat in India’s parliament. Congress Party general secretary KC Venugopal said Gandhi will be “a bold

Israeli forces strike central, southern Gaza as renewed ceasefire stalls

CAIRO: With no sign of progress in painstaking efforts by mediators to broker a ceasefire in the genocidal Gaza, Israeli tanks and warplanes bombarded central and southern areas of the enclave overnight, killing at least 23 Palestinians, local doctors said. Qatari and Egyptian mediators backed by the United States have sought to end hostilities, secure the release of Israeli hostages and Palestinians imprisoned in Israel, and get aid flowing into devastated Gaza to ease a humanitarian crisis. However, sources close to the talks said there was still no sign of a major breakthrough. Residents said Israeli tanks advanced further west

Renewed drilling begins to rescue 40 trapped men

LUCK: Rescuers renewed efforts Thursday to reach 40 men trapped inside a collapsed highway tunnel in India for a fifth day, making slow progress as they began to drill through rock debris and soil. Authorities said they were confident an advanced drilling rig flown in from New Delhi would speed up the rescue at the site in the northern state of Uttarakhand. The plan is to drill a hole and make room for a pipe that can be used by the trapped men to crawl to safety. The drill had penetrated about 3 meters (10 feet) of debris by Thursday
