Pakistanis Have Installed 51 GW of Solar as Citizens Bypass a Grid That Has Failed Them

Pakistan's estimated installed solar capacity reached 51 gigawatts by early 2026 — driven almost entirely by households and businesses self-financing panels to escape record electricity prices and chronic outages — as the country's power sector circular debt stood at Rs1.84 trillion. The government has now changed the rules, replacing unit-for-unit net metering with a less favourable net billing system.

Power tariff increased by Rs 1.9 per unit

Islamabad: The National Electricity Regulatory Authority (Nepra) has approved an increase of up to Rs 1.90 per unit in electricity tariff under quarterly adjustment for the fourth quarter of the financial year 2023-24, which will result in a total burden of Rs 46 billion on consumers. Experts say that currently Discos are exploiting people who have installed net metering. These consumers get only Rs 22 per unit for their solar power, while Discos resell it to other users at

Controversy over the financial rules of net metering

Islamabad: Net metering (solar photovoltaics – PV) is a hot topic these days having attracted a lot of attention and even controversy. The government mainly wants to change the financial rules, while net metering users would like to continue with the existing rules. Undoubtedly, attractive incentives have been provided in many countries for rooftop solar and have also been phased out. There are problems as well as benefits to solar energy, especially rooftop solar PV. First, it is a green, non-polluting source. second, it brings technology. It is the solar rooftop that has raised people’s awareness, expanded the economy and
