NATO to hold biggest exercises since Cold War with 90,000 troops

BRUSSELS: NATO is launching its biggest exercise since the Cold War, testing how US troops could bolster European allies in countries bordering Russia and on the alliance’s eastern flank if a conflict broke out with a “near-peer” adversary. About 90,000 troops are to take part in the Steadfast Defender 2024 exercises that run through May, the alliance’s top commander Chris Cavoli said Thursday. More than 50 ships from aircraft carriers to destroyers will take part, as well as more than 80 fighter jets, helicopters and drones and at least 1,100 combat vehicles, including 133 tanks and 533 infantry fighting vehicles,

The UK’s Sunak warns that asylum seekers could “overwhelm” parts of Europe

ROME: British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said on Saturday he would push for global reforms to the asylum system and warned that the threat of rising refugee numbers could “overwhelm” parts of Europe. In a speech in Italy, Sunak delivered some of his sharpest criticism of the global asylum system as he tries to revive his government’s plans to send refugees to live in Rwanda. Sunak made the comments at a political festival organized by his Italian counterpart Giorgia Meloni’s party, where he warned that some “enemies” were deliberately “driving people to our shores to try to destabilize our societies”.

Success of Roma banking in Europe

PARIS: Off the pace in Serie A, Roma can once again rely on Jose Mourinho to lead them on a long European run to save their season. Mourinho is in his third campaign in charge in the Italian capital and has already led Roma to victory in their inaugural Europa Conference League and then a Europa League final which they lost on penalties to Sevilla. However, in Serie A they continue to lag behind, having finished sixth in each of the Portuguese manager’s two campaigns so far. They are currently seventh, 11 games into this season, and that’s only after

Malta govt and judiciary reporters to European Commission over EU law breaches

BRUSSELS: One of the world’s leading private healthcare providers Steward Health Care International (SHCI) has filed an unusual but critical complaint to the European Commission against the Maltese government and the country’s judiciary for the blatant infringement of European Union (EU) laws on several grounds. In its formal complaint lodged through lawyers, SHCI has lashed out at the Malta court’s judge Mr. Justice Francesco Depasquale who had concluded without evidence that SHCI’s deal with the Maltese government to provide health services in three hospitals was fraudulent. The company has told the European Commission that it was clear the verdict was

Crime and Punishment– Lt Gen (R) Asad Durrani

Dostoevsky’s epic novel was about the crime of a lone killer. Iqbal, our founding philosopher, however, believes that there could be circumstances under which culpable acts by individuals might be mitigated – but there was no way the Almighty would forgive the sins of a society. Makes sense, of course; because their effects were more devastating. And then, though some huge disasters were triggered by a small number at the helm, the consequences had to be borne almost exclusively by the common man who wasn’t even guilty by association. Overtime, one did understand that when dispensing mass retribution, it might
