The All Pakistan Goods Transport Alliance has suspended its nine-day stoppage for 40 days after the federal and Sindh governments gave assurances, including that petroleum prices would be revised fortnightly or monthly rather than daily.

Freight operators have suspended services nationwide, demanding lower diesel taxes, an end to daily price revisions and a cut in withholding tax from 7 to 2 per cent. The government has invited the alliance for talks on Monday.

The government has raised petrol by Rs1.63 to Rs335.81 a litre and high-speed diesel by Rs1.55 to Rs388.38, with kerosene at Rs303.10. The increase reverses the previous day's Re1 cut to petrol and follows crude's rebound after strikes on Iran-backed groups in Iraq.

Petrol stays at Rs335.18 a litre and high-speed diesel at Rs383.46 across the weekend, because the daily revision mechanism introduced on July 17 does not run on Saturdays, Sundays or public holidays. It is the first pause since a run of five consecutive increases added Rs28.71 to a litre of petrol in eight days.
