Eggs have been part of human nutrition since there were before modern people. While they are rich in nutrients, affordable and widely available, their role in health has long been discussed.

A recent study published in the Journal of Nutrition can help restore the positive reputation of eggs. Researchers found that eating one egg per week was linked to 47% lower risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease compared to egg consumption less than once a month, reported Medical news today.

The study also revealed that those who included eggs in their diet had less accumulation of harmful proteins associated with Alzheimer’s.

Alzheimer, the most common type of dementia, remains unmistakable despite years of research. Effective treatments to slow down its evolution are also limited. This has led scientists to explore lifestyle factors, such as diet, which can affect the risk.

Previous studies have highlighted the importance of choline – a nutrient for brain function – and suggested a connection between moderate choline intake and a lower risk of dementia. Eggs, as noted by the authors of the study, is the best nutritional source of choline and therefore deserve attention.

Choline supports various critical functions: it is necessary to produce the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, is the key to building cell membranes and has protective effects on the brain. The nutrient also affects the gene expression associated with memory and knowledge through epigenetic mechanisms.

Although the body can produce choline, it does not make enough in itself, so nutritional intake is essential. In addition to choline, eggs are also a good source of omega-3 fatty acids, which are essential to maintain age brain with age. Unfortunately, many adults in the US do not get enough of these healthy fats.

In short, the study suggests that consuming at least one egg per week can help reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s. The authors believe that the combination of choline and omega-3 in eggs can work together to support cognitive health as we grow older.
