Stay active, let fathers scan: Mariyam Nafees

In a recent appearance on Nida Yasir’s morning show, glamorous mother-to-be and actress Mariyam Nafees shared her version of the struggles associated with pregnancy.

“When I told my mother [I was expecting]the first thing she said was please don’t treat it like an illness and carry on normally,” began Mariyam, who announced her first pregnancy with husband and director Amman Ahmed in a cute Instagram post last November. Almost three years into their marriage, Mariyam hinted that the time was ripe for the couple to embrace motherhood.

“I feel there is a time for everything and again, there are things that Allah has ordained for you,” the Jaan-e-Jahan actor explained. “We really enjoyed our early days of marriage – it will be three years in March – so maybe now is the right time to start this journey.”

Mariyam added that she “loved” the children but admitted that, like most women, she was not immune to doubts about how she would handle the journey into motherhood – particularly with a career in front of the camera where she would be open to having the look she was judged.

“I love children – I love all my friends’ children, and of course I wouldn’t say you’re not afraid,” Mariyam mused. “Well, maybe you’re not afraid, but you definitely have mixed feelings about how to go about things.”

Jokingly referring to her inevitable pregnancy weight gain, Mariyam added: “In the work we do, we have to be in front of the screen and in front of people so we realize we’re gaining weight – I feel like everything looks bloated!”

Regarding exercises that are safe for pregnancy, Mariyam noted that she had been advised by her trainer friend to continue her fitness routine as before without adding anything new. “Of course, this doesn’t mean you start lifting weights, but you can continue with the training,” Mariam said, adding, “Nobody tells you how hard it is to do things like say your prayers!”

Mariyam was careful to point out that every pregnancy is different and that women should consult their doctor before incorporating new exercises into their routine. Taking her mother’s advice not to treat her condition like an illness and to stay active throughout, the mom-to-be added: “Now I do yoga. I was very active throughout my pregnancy and walked 15 to 20,000 steps every day. I traveled, I took all the flights, I did my work in production.”

Pushing aside the cultural norm of shielding any mention of pregnancy from the public, Mariyam explained that when she and Amman revealed their baby’s impending arrival on Instagram, she was considered to be in the ‘safe zone’.

“People are still so shy when they talk about pregnancies,” observed Mariyam. “But I want to talk about these things! Why do I have to hide my bump? It’s a very natural thing. Nobody says spread indecency, but it’s something I should be proud of. The journey I’m on is so beautiful and I want to I share it with people who are happy for me.”

Mariyam also credits having a supportive partner as crucial to maintaining a smooth pregnancy. Recalling her doctor’s appointments and scans – all of which Amman attended – Maryam expressed her sympathy for the women she had seen who always came alone, even on weekends.

“It made me appreciate my husband. I didn’t even have to tell him,” said Mariyam fervently, who remains a firm believer that fathers can bond with their babies before birth if they participate in prenatal care. “It was a joy to see him looking at the scans. It was so beautiful.”

Mariyam and Ammar married in March 2022. In November 2024, the couple took to Instagram to make the official pregnancy announcement, using a pair of cute yellow sneakers to symbolize their unborn child.
