PARIS:
The Japanese Nintendo video game giant presented the new version of the extremely popular Switch console on Wednesday, with the briefing being eagerly awaited by both players and investors.
Very similar to its predecessor, which started in 2017, the Switch 2 has a larger screen, a broader base and maintains the removable “Joy-Con” controllers.
It will also be more powerful than the original model, while maintaining the hybrid concept of the console, allowing players to use it on the go and connect with a television-basic factor for the success of the first switch that has sold 150 million units worldwide.
“When you ask the players, they report the performance and game software, but in fact they seem to want the same experience as the original switch,” said Hideki Yasuda, an analyst of Japanese Toyo Securities.
“I think what they really want is just higher performance.”
Despite recent attempts to differentiate films and theme parks, Nintendo’s basic business still depends largely on video games.
The company cut its profit forecasts in February due to the slowdown in its star console sales.
Rumors of the industry indicate a possible June liberalization, with Yasuda estimating that six million units will initially be available.
In the long run, Nintendo could sell 19 million points in 2025 and 21 million next year, according to Toyo Securities estimates.
Another key factor is pricing, which experts estimate that range from $ 430 to $ 540.
Uncertainty about US import invoices also remains concern, although Nintendo has recently transferred a growing production from China to Vietnam, which is facing lower duties.
As the video game industry faces a global deceleration, characterized by waves of layoffs, the arrival of Switch 2 could rejuvenate the sales of the worldwide console. AFP
