Meera Jee’s ‘Agent Anila’ wants to spread a virus

KARACHI:

Brilliant performances, stunning action sequences, impeccable sound and breathtaking CGI – these are all elements missing from Meera Jee’s upcoming film, Agent Anila. But, if one is brave enough to perfectly sum up the trailer of Qasim Panhwar’s offering, the phrase that comes to mind is “wonderfully devastating”.

We all often look for movies that are so terrifyingly awful that they end up being enjoyable. If the trailer is anything to go by, at best, Agent Anila it may just serve that purpose. At worst, it could be next Aye Na chain.

The trailer has it all – Meera Jee talking about her gang that’s spread across the globe, audio that isn’t quite in sync, an explosion that would put the most skilled CGI artist to shame, and hollow sounds for when someone gets shot. There are also action sequences shot from a lower angle that make it look like it has its back. Perhaps that would be worth it if one chooses to go and watch this movie which will be released on June 21 this year.

But hey, don’t take our word for it. There are many others who seem to be equally interested and intimidated by the film’s quirks. For example, Fasi Zaka took to X to share a rather dramatic and what one assumes was supposed to be an impressive quote from the film, saying, “Just because of this great scene, I think I’ll watch this movie two times on its release day.” A less kind X user responded: “Only dunking my head in a barrel full of meth could make me see this.”

While hard-core drunkenness may not be necessary to watch the film, no one questions how the project made it through several rounds of approval. One X user rightly opined: “Fire animations scream fake, gun actions lame…I wonder why no one from production to release stage can notice all the stupid stuff.”

But that is not all! In a world engulfed by the massive damage caused by COVID, Agent Anila wants to work with her team to spread a virus. The reason behind this is a mystery – and not enticing enough to buy a ticket. If, however, you’re brave enough to take on this challenge, just know what you’re signing up for. Good luck.
