WASHINGTON:
Mattel began its first Barbie doll with type 1 diabetes in an effort to promote a greater sense of integration and empathy among children, the company’s vice president said on Tuesday.
The new Barbie is designed in collaboration with Type 1 Non -Profit Diabetes T1D.
“The introduction of a Barbie doll with type 1 diabetes marks an important step in our commitment to participation and representation,” said Krista Berger, a senior Barbie vice president and world leader of the dolls.
“Barbie helps to shape children’s early perceptions of the world and by reflecting medical conditions such as T1D. We ensure that more children can see themselves in the stories they imagine and the dolls they love.”
Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune condition where the body attacks and destroys the cells in the pancreas that make insulin.
They are often diagnosed in childhood and patients should monitor their glucose levels and receive insulin every day.
The new doll wears a CGM – a small device that constantly measures the individual’s sugar – in her hand to help manage her condition.
To keep the CGM in its place, it uses a pink heart -shaped medical tape along with a phone showing an application to help monitor blood sugar levels all day.
It also has an insulin pump, a small, wealthy medical device that allows the automated dosage of insulin as required, connected to its waist.
The doll wears a blue Polka Dot Top and fits a skirt inspired by the global diabetes awareness symbols.
Along with the new model, the company also launched a Lila Moss doll, complete with CGM Paraphernalia.
Moss, daughter of Supermodel Kate Moss, was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes when he was 12 years old.
For several years Mattel has aimed to differentiate its models, especially those of the Barbie virtual doll, having offered for decades – excluding some exceptions – a young, blond white woman with high heels.
Since 2016, the company of California launched mainly “Curvy”, “Petite” and “Tall” Barbie editions.
In 2019, the company presented a series of “sex” dolls as well as those with physical disabilities.
