In a shocking move as part of a Poetry of Resistance campaign, esteemed star Hina Bayat took to Instagram, sharing a compelling two-part video. Accompanied by a caption that reflects the lessons humanity has yet to learn, Bayat shed light on the power of timeless poetry to discuss contemporary challenges.
Captioning the video, “So much more to learn, lessons not learned!” continued to share the poem in parallel. Bayat began by drawing attention to the profound insights of Allama Muhammad Iqbal, the revered poet of the East, known for his visionary dreams of Pakistan and Muslim unification. He highlighted Iqbal’s foresight in dealing with the issues facing the Muslim world, particularly in 1936 when his work Zarb-e-Kaleem was published, with a poem entitled Daam-e-Tehzeeb.
Bayat reads Iqbal
“The way the world is today,” Bayat began, “the heart aches and we believe the world has changed. But, among our elders, there are those who could see the situation at that time and also foresee future conditions. Allama Muhammad Iqbal, the poet of the East, who dreamed of Pakistan, who wanted Muslims to unite.”
He continued, “That was his passion, his devotion, which, perhaps, we did not understand. And the Muslim world is now at a point where we should never be. In 1936, two years before his death, Zarb-e-Kaleem was published, in which there is a poem called Daam-e-Tehzeebwhich I will present because the understanding of the same is of the utmost importance today.”
Reciting lines from the poem, Bayat explored themes of humanity, oppression and the complexities of navigating modern life. He underscored the relevance of Iqbal’s words to the current global landscape, echoing the challenges facing the Muslim world. The lyrics echoed Iqbal’s stance on Europe, portraying it as a defender of the oppressed, and touched on the complexities of cultural exchange and the need for a collective resolution to the ongoing struggles in Syria and Palestine.
In the second part, Bayat provided insightful commentary, decoding Iqbal’s references and relating them to the present day. He praised Iqbal’s passion for unity and reflected on the evolving dynamics of the Muslim world. The actor urged viewers to reexamine historical wisdom, stressing the critical importance of understanding and applying Iqbal’s teachings in the modern context.
Bayat spoke about how Europe’s status as a “buyer” could have multiple meanings. It shed light on how Europe could be interpreted as the “buyer” of the oppressed in modern times, given that there is an exchange in the equation. Likewise, when talking about the ‘peer-e-kaleesa’ or leaders of the Church, Bayat shared that these leaders succeeded in enlightening minds with modern science. However, illumination springs from electricity and may not find its origin in the illuminating path of faith.
The veteran star lamented how the Muslim faction seems to have been redirected. He reflected on how new forms of culture and civilization were introduced into the modern world after he convinced Muslims under the Turks that they were slaves in need of liberation. Concluding her video, Bayat offered advice in the form of a revision of history to improve our future.
About child abuse and safety
In another part of the interview with a local network, Bayat addressed the sensitive issue of child abuse while chatting with Madeha Naqvi. Drawing from personal experiences, she shed light on situations where children were exposed to potential harm in various scenarios. The actor called for increased awareness among parents about the safety of their children, especially in situations involving domestic help and public places.
“I’ve seen drivers in cars with small children in their arms,” Bayatt said. “It’s wrong legally – you’re driving a car, you can’t have anyone on your lap. Also, you can’t seat kids in the front (passenger side.) You have to put their seat belt on and seat them. Second, I’ve also dealt with many cases where children have been abused. Someone sends their child with a maid to play in the park. I know parents can’t be everywhere all the time, but some things are important.”
He further stated, “Your child leaves your house. Where is she for an hour and a half? There have been so many rackets about it. Children have been abused, I have personally faced such a case, where the little girl was abused a lot. She was a little one, she could not she carries it. The maid and the guard were together. They took her, for an hour and a half the girl was given to someone else, they took money, and the parents have no idea.”
Considering the guidelines outlined by religion, Bayat shared, “I don’t talk so much about religion, but our faith is part of our life. There are some rules in our religion. There are some boundaries of respect. people like brother you, your father—all those you’re not allowed to marry. But I remember when I was growing up, even cousins and uncles weren’t allowed to visit unless our parents were home.” She continued, “God told you about to prevent it. God forbid, even if there is a one in a million chance, that chance should not be given.”
