BERLIN:
A German court on Friday dismissed an order request brought by consumer protection teams to prevent the American Meta technology giant from using user data from Facebook and Instagram to train artificial intelligence systems.
The Senior Regional Court in Cologne ended up in Meta, which holds both social media platforms, had not violated the European Union law.
“Meta is pursuing a legal fee using the data for the training of artificial intelligence systems,” the court said in a statement.
The diet of user data in AI training systems is allowed “even without the consent of the affected”, he added.
Meta has announced plans to launch AI models with data from Facebook and Instagram from Tuesday.
The court said the balance of interests between the parties was in favor of allowing META to process user data for the development of AI.
The training of AI systems “cannot be achieved with other equally effective, less annoying means,” the court said.
Among the reasons mentioned by the judges was Facebook’s intention to only use public data available in the public that could also be found through search.
Meta had also “taken effective measures to significantly mitigate the impact” on users, the court said, including communicating the plans through its mobile applications.

“There are still significant doubts about legality,” the organization’s leader, Wolfgang Schuldzinski, said in a statement.
The NOYB -based privacy campaign team said last week that it had sent a ceasefire and rejection letter for plans for the use of user data for AI training.
The letter was the first step ahead of a possible lawsuit or class-in-action lawsuit against Meta, the team said.AFP
