Complaint filed against Ranbir for hurting religious sentiments

Looks like Ranbir Kapoor might find himself in the middle of yet another controversy. A complaint lodged at Mumbai’s Ghatkopar police station targeted the Bollywood actor and his family, alleging violation of religious sentiments in a Christmas celebration video. The Indian Express.

Sanjay Tiwari, the complainant, pointed out in the complaint that the video shows the actor pouring liquor on a cake and lighting it on fire while shouting “Jai Mata Di”.

Tiwari argued that Hinduism traditionally invokes the god of fire before other deities and the Kapoor family using intoxicants during the celebration of a different religious festival while marking another religion’s festival was deliberate and disrespectful.

He claimed that the act of burning the cake followed by chanting ‘Jai Mata Di’ deeply hurt his religious sentiments. No formal first information report (FIR) has been filed in connection with this incident so far.

A video posted on the official Instagram account of entertainment magazine Filmfare shows a man seemingly pouring liquor on a cake, which Ranbir then lit next to Alia Bhatt saying ‘Jai Mata Di’. Filmfare clarified that the clip was from the Kapoor family’s Christmas dinner.

“Ranbir Kapoor adds to the festive cheer by shouting ‘Jai Mata Di’ while lighting the cake during the Kapoor family’s Christmas dinner!” read the caption accompanying the Instagram post.

Ranbir had previously grabbed headlines for his recent offering, Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s misogynistic film Animal. Apart from this, the Bollywood couple also hit the news after they publicly showed Raha’s face to their little one for the first time ahead of the family Christmas dinner.
