With Cillian Murphy walking away with the coveted Best Actor Oscar earlier this month, Peaky Blinders Creator Stephen Knight has announced that the Hollywood star is set to reprise his role as Tommy Shelby in the sequel to the fan-favorite British crime drama. Entertainment Weekly.
“He’ll definitely be back for it,” Knight said Birmingham World at the premiere of his new BBC series The city. “We’ll shoot them in September.”
The period drama, which ran for six seasons from 2013-2022, is loosely based on the exploits of the Birmingham gang Peaky Blinders after the First World War. Following Murphy’s Tommy Shelby and his crew, the show debuted on BBC Two in 2013 and moved to BBC One in 2018 for its fifth season. However, ratings skyrocketed when the show hit Netflix. According Entertainment Weekly, Murphy previously confirmed in 2022 that he was interested in revisiting Tommy Shelby in a film. “I hope we get to make a movie and Steve really wants to make a movie,” Murphy said at the time. “There’s still more life in the old dog, I think.”
Ever since the popular series came to an end, Knight has been clear about his plans to follow up the finale with a movie. “I call this the end of the beginning,” Knight previously said Entertainment Weekly in 2021. “We’re going to finish the series as it is right now, but we’re going to do the movie, which we’re going to shoot in 18 months, maybe a little longer. After that, depending on how the structure of the movie will fall into place , we’re going to spin off some spinoffs that will be part of the same universe.”
With Murphy once again returning to Tommy Shelby’s tattered suit, ice cream and newsboy hat, there’s no doubt that Peaky Blinders fandom will be in for a treat when the film comes together.
