Children need a lasting humanitarian ceasefire, shares Priyanka

Priyanka Chopra Jonas recently used her Instagram Stories on Monday to reinforce a critical message, calling for a ceasefire in Palestine amid the painful and devastating effects of Israeli bombing. The post shared by Priyanka comes from UNICEF, the United Nations agency dedicated to providing humanitarian aid to children around the world.

The reposted post contained a quote attributed to Catherine Russell, UNICEF’s executive director, who stated categorically: “Children need a lasting humanitarian ceasefire.” The accompanying caption, originally published by UNICEF on December 2, sheds light on the dire situation in the Gaza Strip, emphasizing the urgent need for a lasting ceasefire to protect the lives of innocent children.

Highlighting the disturbing account of the violence, the caption read: “Today, the Gaza Strip is again the most dangerous place in the world to be a child. After seven days of respite from the horrific violence, the fighting has started again. More children for sure they will die Before the pause, more than 5,300 Palestinian children were reportedly killed in 48 days of relentless bombardment – a number that does not include many children who are still missing and believed to be buried under rubble.”

He continued, “If violence returns to this scale and intensity, we can assume that hundreds more children will be killed and injured every day. And if we cannot get water, food, medical supplies, blankets and warm clothing to those in need , we will face a humanitarian disaster. It doesn’t have to be this way – for seven days, there was a glimmer of hope for children amid this horrific nightmare.”

The appeal then called on all parties involved to uphold their obligations under international humanitarian law and ensure the protection and assistance of children. “More than 30 children held hostage in Gaza have been safely released and reunited with their families,” it continued to read. “And the humanitarian pause has allowed an increase in the delivery of life-saving supplies to and across Gaza. UNICEF and our partners have been able to scale up operations and programs significantly. And we have been able to begin connecting separated children with their families.” “

The statement then went on to stress: “This was not nearly enough to meet the scale of humanitarian needs, but it was a start. Now, we need increased safe and predictable access to reach those children who have been injured, displaced and injured. And we need to get supplies to children who are vulnerable in the cold, wet weather that has set in. Children need a lasting humanitarian ceasefire.”

Priyanka’s advocacy for a ceasefire aligns with her involvement in an open letter signed by several celebrities in November. The letter, addressed to the US Congress and President Joe Biden, urged immediate action for a de-escalation and ceasefire in Gaza amid rising Palestinian casualties. Notables like Richard Gere, Hasan Minhaj and the Hadid sisters Gigi and Bella joined the Indian superstar at the rally for peace in the region.
