Celebrities urge the United Kingdom to terminate weapons sales in Israel

LONDON:

Pop Star Dua Lipa joined about 300 UK celebrities in signing an open letter on Thursday, urging Britain to stop weapons sales in Israel, following similar applications from lawyers and writers.

Actors, musicians, activists and other public figures wrote the letter calling for Prime Minister Keir Starmer to “end the UK complicity in horror in Gaza”.

The British sense of pop reaction Dua Lipa was a vocal for the Gaza war and last year criticized Israel’s attack as a “genocide”.

Israel has repeatedly denied claims for genocide and says its campaign intends to crush Hamas after the deadly October 2023 attack.

Other signatories include actors Benedict Cumberbatch, Tilda Swinton and Riz Ahmed and musicians Paloma Faith, Annie Lennox and mass attack.

“You can’t call it” unacceptable “and continue sending weapons”, read the letter to Starmer’s leader organized by Love, a United Kingdom -based humanitarian aid and a charity to defend refugees.

Athletic Broadcasting Gary Lineker, who resigned from his role in the BBC after a social media position containing anti -Semitic images, also signed the letter.

The signatories urged the United Kingdom to secure “full humanitarian access to the whole Gaza”, Broker a “immediate and permanent ceasefire” and “immediately suspend” all weapons sales in Israel.

“Gaza kids can’t wait for another minute.

Earlier this month, Starmer hit Israel’s “intense” renewed military attack on Gaza and promised to take “further specific actions” if he did not stop – without describing in detail what actions they could be.

Last September, the UK government suspended 30 of the 350 weapons export licenses to Israel, saying there was a “clear danger” that they could be used to violate humanitarian law.

Global rage has grown after Israel has finished ceasefire in March and strengthened military operations this month, killing thousands of people in two months according to Gaza Ministry’s data in Gaza.

The humanitarian situation also caused alarm and fears of hunger after a two -month blockade for help entering the destroyed territory.

Over 800 United Kingdom lawyers, including Supreme Court judges and about 380 British and Irish writers warned of Israel to commit a “genocide” in Gaza in open letters this week.

1,218 people were killed in the October 2023 attack, according to AFP based on official data.

Israel’s military aggression in Gaza killed 54,084, mainly citizens, in Gaza, according to his health ministry, shifted almost the entire population and was destroyed by the besieged lane. AFP
