LONDON:
Burberry’s sales declined by a lesserly expected 1 % in the first quarter, as it benefited in America and Europe from the clearer positioning of the brand lending to its British heritage, the luxury team said on Friday.
Burberry’s shares, which were more than doubled in September, increased 4 per centimeter.
Known for its ditches and controls, Burberry uses its British heritage to win its customers under the leadership of CEO Josh Schulman, who took over just a year ago and the company said her summer campaigns had expanded her call.
Highgrove, inspired by King Charles’ private home garden, reacted with luxury customers, Schulman said, while the festival, based on music festivals such as Glastonbury and hats and boots, new customers.
Comparable sales have returned to growth in Europe, the company said, while the negotiation in America was reinforced. Sales decreased in China and the rest of Asia, but the decline rate was about half that was observed in the previous quarter.
“Improving comparable sales, power in our basic categories and increasing the desire of the brand gives us a belief in the process,” Schulman said, adding that the autumn collection was “well accepted”.
Burberry said it saw reduced activity from tourists, but the strongest demand from new and existing customers helped offset the impact.
“We are really pleased with the successive improvement we see in all areas and especially the displacement to positive Comps in America and EMEA,” he told reporters. “It’s a hard macro out there and we take things step by step, but we’re optimistic about the quarters ahead.”
Burberry, who has issued several profit warnings in recent years, is falling one -fifth of its worldwide workforce, a radical cost cutting measure that investors have welcomed.
The decline of 1 % of total comparable retail sales in the first quarter, which ended on June 28, won the analysts’ forecasts for a 3 % reduction in consensus set up by the company and improved 6 % in the previous quarter.
Citi analysts said the brand had reported the third consecutive quarter of improvement, as Schulman began its new strategy last November, implying that comparable sales could be positive in the current quarter.
“In a quarter that was characterized by further macroeconomic and geopolitical pressures and weaker tourist spending in Europe and Japan, Burberry probably won better than the fourth -class classmates,” they said.
