After Hasina: The Question of Unity Amid Bangladesh’s Fascist Legacy
The Awami League’s creeping fascism has done more than weaken political opposition and undermine Bangladesh’s democracy—it has corroded the nation’s very spirit. Its rise over the past decade and a half, until a student-led uprising toppled its regime, was fueled by ignorance, greed, and propaganda. More a syndicate than a political party, it preyed on the vices of the people. Tolerating any remnants of the Awami League in post-uprising Bangladesh is thus a dangerous contradiction. A simple ban, as many have called for, won’t solve the problem—deep, strategic failures must be addressed. Bangladesh’s future depends on confronting the Awami League.
