- At least 2.205 were killed, 3,640 were injured in Afghanistan.
- Another 12 were killed in Nangarhar and Laghman.
- “Rescue efforts are still ongoing,” the deputy spokesman says.
The number of deaths from the powerful earthquake hit by Eastern Afghanistan on the weekend has increased abruptly to over 2,200 on Thursday, according to a new tax, making it the most deadly in decades to hit the country.
The overwhelming majority of those killed in the magnitude-6.0 earthquake that pushed the mountainous area bordering Pakistan late Sunday was in Kunar province, where 2,205 people died and 3,640 were injured, according to a Taliban government tax.
Another 12 people were killed and hundreds were injured in neighboring Nangarhar and Laghman provinces. Tolls were expected to increase as volunteers and rescuers were still pulling bodies from the ruins.
“Hundreds of bodies have been recovered from homes destroyed during search and rescue operations,” the Hamdullah Fitrat government spokesman wrote on Thursday, announcing the new toll, adding that “rescue efforts continue to continue.”
Limited access to the most difficult areas of the Kunar mountain province has delayed rescue and relief efforts, with rocks of repetitive aftershocks already inhibiting precarious roads engraved on the side of the rocks.
Various countries have flown to help, but hundreds of villagers in the Hard-Hit-Hit Nurgal area were still incorrect in the countryside, compressing many families under tracks that were pulling from the ruins and are not sure where they will get a floor for food.
A race broke out for food when some finally arrived in the field at Mazar Dara, where hundreds of people had been camped outside, they had little help.
“Yesterday, some people brought some food. Everyone was flooded on them. People are starving. We had nothing to eat for a long time,” said Zahir Khan Safi, 48. AFP.
‘Every hour counts’
Poor infrastructure in the poor country, still fragile for four decades of war, has also prevented the emergency response.
The World Health Organization (WHO) warned that local health care services were “under huge pressure”, lacking supplies, medicines and staff.
The Agency has offended $ 4 million to provide health interventions and expansion of mobile health services and supply distribution.
“Every hour counts,” said the emergency team leading to Afghanistan Jamshed Tanoli. “Hospitals are struggling, families mourn and survivors have lost everything.”
The loss of US external aid in the country in January this year has aggravated the rapid exhaustion of emergency reserves and logistics.
NGOs and UN have warned that the earthquake is creating a crisis in a crisis, with Afghanistan in cash that is already protesting with overlapping humanitarian disasters.
Filippo Grandi, head of the UN Refugee Service, said the earthquake had “affected more than 500,000 people” in eastern Afghanistan.
The country disputes endemic poverty, severe drought and the influx of millions of Afghans who were forced to return to the country by the neighbors of Pakistan and Iran by the Taliban 2021 acquisition.
Even when Afghanistan started from its last disaster, Pakistan began a new impetus to expel the Afghans, with more than 6,300 people crossing the Border Point Torkham in Torkham’s Nangarhar province on Tuesday.
