Qatar’s Former Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani Dies at 74; Four Days of National Mourning Declared
The Amiri Diwan of Qatar announced on July 12 the death of Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, Qatar's Father Emir, at the age of 74. Sheikh Hamad ruled Qatar from 1995 to 2013 before voluntarily abdicating in favour of his son, the current Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani. Qatar has declared four days of national mourning. Sheikh Hamad was the architect of Qatar's transformation from a small Gulf state into a global diplomatic, media, and LNG power — and an important partner for Pakistan through the Qatar-Pakistan LNG framework.
