Hollywood’s obsession with Cleopatra, the last active ruler of Egypt’s Ptolemaic Kingdom, is far from over as it has been reported that Sony Pictures is planning a new biopic about the late queen. However, a controversy has arisen regarding the rumored cast of the film.
Several films and drama series have been released about Cleopatra, whose life is often associated with political intrigue, romance and tragedy.

According Hindustan Times, an insider named Daniel Richtman claimed that after his release Dune: Part II, Canadian director Denis Villeneuve will begin work on his next project titled Cleopatra.
He adds that the film will be based on the biography, Cleopatra: A Life by Stacy Schiff, and its script will be prepared by David Scarpa, known for writing the film Napoleon.
In an interview with TVADennis confirmed his upcoming project, stating: “I also have a historical film project about the life of Cleopatra. This project is in progress and I am very excited. I hope to be able to bring it to the screen before or after the filming of the second part of Dune”.
Zendaya’s casting sparks controversy
However, a controversy has arisen regarding the actress who is rumored to play the lead role in the film. The Spiderman Star Zendaya has reportedly bagged the role of Cleopatra and the decision to cast her in the film didn’t sit well with netizens.
One user expressed his concern on X, ex-Twitter, writing, “What is Hollywood’s obsession with casting anyone other than Greeks in Cleopatra movies?”
Another stated: “Cleopatra was Greek. She was not African or any other race, but Greek.”
