Former International Cricket Council (ICC) president Zaheer Abbas on Wednesday slammed the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) management saying that when the people at the helm do not understand the sport, then the team will end up with such results.
“The game will continue to suffer if favorites are set,” Abbas said during the course Geo News ‘Geo Pakistan’ show. He added that people are chasing cricket to destroy sports in the country.
“For God’s sake give cricket to athletes,” Abbas appealed.
The former ICC president also expressed disapproval of former captain Inzamam ul Haq stepping down as chief selector during the World Cup.
“There is no example in the world where someone quits while the team is away to play the World Cup,” Abbas said. He added that the team’s performance dipped after the loss to India.
The Pakistan team, on the verge of pulling out of the World Cup in India, is under fire and the board is also embroiled in a row after PCB chief Governor Babar Azam’s leak to a top board official.
Things took a turn for the worse when Inzamam resigned as chief selector during the World Cup following allegations that he was a partner in a player management company.
“People talk without investigation. Questions were asked about me, so I decided it was better to resign,” Inzamam said in a statement, according to Geo News.
There are allegations against Inzamam as it was revealed that he owns shares in a company owned by the players’ agent Talha Rehmani.
That revelation sparked concerns about potential conflicts of interest, given that Rehmani represents several of Pakistan’s top cricketers, including Babar Azam, Mohammad Rizwan and Shaheen Shah Afridi.
Additionally, there are additional questions about whether Inzamam’s dual role as both chief selector and shareholder in a company that represents top cricketers can influence player selection decisions.
In response, the PCB said it has set up a five-member fact-finding committee to investigate allegations of conflict of interest reported in the media regarding the team selection process.
Inzamam was appointed chairman of the men’s national committee on August 7 and was also appointed chairman of the junior men’s selection committee earlier this month.
PCB management committee chairman Zaka Ashraf said Inzamam resigned on his own without discussing it with him.
In a statement, Ashraf said he had not met Inzamam before his resignation and had arranged a meeting with him to seek clarification on the ongoing dispute.
