Xi said natural disasters, traffic accidents and labor safety incidents are prone to occur with the Spring Festival approaching and due to the negative effect of cold waves.

He asked the relevant districts and agencies to consider the possible risks and take their responsibilities to prevent major losses and ensure the safety of people’s lives and property.

Chinese Premier Li Qiang called for full-scale rescue and relief efforts. Li, also a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, urged rescuers to work against time to search for missing persons and make every effort to reduce casualties.

He also called for efforts to assess the hidden risks of geological hazards in the surrounding areas and strengthen monitoring of potential hazards to prevent secondary damage. Li stressed that people in danger should be taken to safe places as soon as possible, and people’s lives and properties should be fully secured.

Vice Premier Zhang Guoqing, also a member of the Politburo of the CPC Central Committee, led a task force to Yunnan to guide the rescue work.
