Teyana Taylor has left her fans and pop culture watchers stunned with her latest statements about Kanye West.
A longtime friend and collaborator, the controversial rapper has been hailed by the current Oscar hopeful as a brother, with the latter saying Vanity fair that “she’s not going to leave him and be like, ‘Yeah, I’m leaving this mother*****.’
“My brothers are doing something I don’t agree with,” says o One battle after another The actress described her definitive stance on the matter.
As Tina Fey once claimed in the Las Culturistas podcast, “Authenticity is Dangerous and Expensive,” Teyana’s timing to address the Kanye situation is therefore decidedly poor.
While admirable for her honesty, the singer-actress’s candid response could prove costly in her race for the Academy Awards.
Taylor recently won the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress – Motion Picture for her impressive performance in Paul Thomas Anderson’s latest film.
With Oscar voting taking off at 9 a.m. PT on Jan. 12, however – just one day after the Globes – the 35-year-old star’s status as this season’s favorite to not only earn a nomination but win the award is now being questioned by more than a few online.
Elsewhere, Taylor is being compared to one of last season’s most prominent nominees, Karla Sofía Gascón.
The Spanish-born actress, who became the first transgender performer to win a best actress nomination for her performance in Emilia Perezshe was mocked and criticized mercilessly for her controversial tweets discovered about racism and other offenses leading up to the Oscars telecast.
But despite the uproar and speculation over whether Netflix would make it easier for her to attend the Oscars amid her scandal, Gascon was actually invited to the event — even if her chances of winning may have been greatly diminished.
So it’s worth considering that if Biden-era Hollywood was indifferent to such “misdemeanors,” perhaps the ongoing political scenario is worth almost nothing in terms of Taylor’s remarks.
Moving ever closer to a wider acceptance of questionable behavior across the board, the reality of Trump-led America has apparently permeated every segment of the country’s society, with its film industry likely no different.
Indeed, it would not be an exaggeration to believe that a heavy political story like One battle after another it would inspire dozens of victory speeches with similar sentiments from its contenders during the Hollywood run of years past — for example, celebrity speeches during Donald Trump’s first term.
And yet Brazilian actor Wagner Moura – conveniently a Hollywood outsider – emerged as the only public figure to acknowledge the ongoing volatility of global politics, reiterating the power of “values” in his Golden Globe-winning speech last Sunday.
Instead, a handful of American celebrities wore barely visible pins, labeled “ICE Out” and “Be Good,” ostentatiously avoiding a bigger responsibility while “making a statement.”
Still, the fate of Teyana Taylor’s awards season will be revealed in due time, with the nominations for the 98th Academy Awards announced on January 22.
