Why Is Bowen Yang Leaving ‘Saturday Night Live’?

Bowen Yang prepares to take his final bow at Saturday Night Live stage.

Yang, who went from behind-the-scenes writer to Emmy-nominated actress, will step down SNL partway through its 51st season, ending its run on December 20, 2025.

Fittingly, the milestone episode will be hosted by his own Wicked: For good co-star and close friend Ariana Grande, with Cher taking the stage as musical guest.

Having a host who is a personal friend and collaborator adds a celebratory tone to his finale SNL night.

The 35-year-old joined the NBC sketch comedy as a writer in 2018, beginning the show’s 44th season.

He joined the cast as a featured player the following year (2019) and joined the main cast for Season 47.

Bowen Yang is leaving SNL: Here’s why

The departure of the sketch comedy series is reportedly Young’s personal choice, contrary to rumors that she had an affair with Lorne Michaels, its creator and executive producer. SNL.

While his departure comes as a shock to some, others aren’t so surprised as he has outgrown the nest late at night.

Lately, the comedian has emerged as one of Hollywood’s most sought-after talents, with a full slate of projects already waiting in the wings.

Additionally, earlier this month, it was reported that he and Matt Rogers from No good deed are co-writing and co-starring in an untitled new comedy for Searchlight.

So the reason for Yang leaving Studio 8H is that he can get a ton of nonSNL concerts and is ready to move on.

Fans who tuned into the show and saw Yang’s rise are heartbroken by the news, feeling bittersweet.

It is worth noting that there is currently no official public statement from Yang himself or SNL for his exit.
