Riyadh:
The UN’s World Nutrition Program said Yemen’s Huthis was holding one of his employees in the Rebel-Held Capital Sanaa capital on Sunday, with more staff members fearing to be arrested in other parts of the country.
“WFP’s offices in Sanaa were introduced by local security forces that have kept a member of the staff, with reports of other deductions (staff) in other areas,” the organization said in a statement to AFP.
He added that he was “urgently looking for additional information” from Huthi authorities, who occupied the capital Sanaa in 2014 and are now controlling large parts of Yemen. A security source told AFP that seven WFP employees and three UNICEF employees were arrested on Sunday after raiding their offices.
WFP’s statement said that “the arbitrary detention of humanitarian staff is unacceptable.
After an Israeli strike in Sanaa on Thursday that killed the prime minister of the Iran team, a Yemeni security source told AFP that Huthi authorities had arrested dozens of people in Sanaa and other areas “for a suspicion of cooperation with Israel.”
In January, the guerrillas held eight workers of the United Nations, adding dozens of United Nations team and the aid group held since June 2024.
Huthis claimed that June’s arrests included “an American-Israeli espionage network” operating under the coverage of humanitarian organizations-UN-rejected.
UN Secretary -General Antonio Guterres in June demanded their “immediate and unconditional liberalization” and mourned the “sad tragedy” of death when holding a WFP employee earlier this year.
A decade of civil war has plunged Yemen into one of the worst humanitarian crises in the world, with more than half of the population based on aid.
