- Zelenskiy says the truce to try Moscow’s willingness to end the war.
Ukrainian and US officials met behind closed doors for hours of talks in Saudi Arabia on Tuesday to find a path to ending the war with Russia, after KIEV forces began their biggest attack on Moscow at night.
Ukrainians and restless allies attended any evidence of improvement – or further deterioration – in KIEB’s problematic transatlantic ties after disastrous talks by President Volodymyr Zelenskiy with US President Donald Trump last month.
Under Trump, KIEB’s only ally has increased his war policy and has expressed pressure on Ukraine, refuses to provide security guarantees under any peace agreement, while at the same time ceasing to help military assistance and exchange of information with KIEB.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio told reporters on the way to Jeddah talks that the meeting would be important to count if Ukraine is willing to make concessions to reach peace.
More than three hours at the meeting, Mike Waltz, the US National Security Adviser, came up with a break with Rubio and told reporters: “We are there.”
Andriy Yermak, head of his staff Zelenskiy, who is leading the Ukrainian delegation, said earlier that the meeting was “very constructively”.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, a close ally of KIEB, told Trump Monday that he hopes US military assistance and information exchange could be repeated as a result of a “positive result” in talks.
“Dear Americans, dear Ukrainians, don’t miss this opportunity. The whole world is watching you in Jeddah today. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk wrote in X.
Three dead in a drone attack in Moscow
As diplomacy plays, Ukraine’s positions are under great pressure, especially in the Kursk area of Russia, where Moscow forces have begun a boost to flush the KIEB troops, who were trying to keep a piece of land as a trading chip.
Ukraine at night began its largest attack in Moscow and the surrounding area, showing that Kiev can also land with large blows after a steady stream of Russian rocket attacks and aircraft, one of which killed 14 people on Saturday.
The attack, in which 337 aircraft landed over Russia, killed at least three employees of a meat warehouse and briefly ended at Moscow’s four airports, Russian officials said.
Ukraine said its aircraft hit an oil refinery near Moscow and an installation in the Russian Oryol area, while Hungary said crude oil transport through Russia’s Druzhba pipeline were suspended after the attack.
Prior to the talks, Zelenskiy proposed an initial truce with Russia in the air and at sea, in an attempt to show that he works for Trump’s goal to end the war at lightning speed and that the obstacle for this goal is Moscow, not Kiev.
Zelenskiy says the idea of a truce would be an opportunity to try Moscow’s willingness to end the war.
Zelenskiy’s Oval Office clashes with Trump left the signature of a bilateral mineral in Limbo and KIEB’s effort to receive security guarantees from Washington Adrift.
Prior to the talks, Yermak told reporters that security guarantees remained key to Ukraine, but suggested that they could only consider it on Tuesday.
Zelenskiy, who was in Saudi Arabia on Monday to meet Prince Mohammed bin Salman, does not participate in talks.
Trump’s special envoy to the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, who has been drawn up in Ukraine’s diplomacy but is not involved in Tuesday’s talks, said he was optimistic that the US-Ukrainian mineral agreement would soon be signed.
Witkoff plans to visit Moscow to meet President Vladimir Putin, a person informed of the plans.
