Venezuela on Sunday condemned what it said was a military provocation by neighboring Trinidad and Tobago in coordination with the US Central Intelligence Agency, aimed at provoking a full-scale military confrontation with the Latin American nation.
Joint military exercises between the US and Trinidad and Tobago are currently underway in the Caribbean, and Venezuela said it had arrested a group of mercenaries “with direct information from US intelligence” whose aim was to carry out a false flag attack in the region.
A false flag attack is an operation where an act is performed in such a way that a different party appears responsible.
“A false flag attack is underway in waters bordering Trinidad and Tobago or from the territory of Trinidad or Venezuela to provoke a full military confrontation with our country,” the Venezuelan government said in the statement.
The statement, issued by Vice President Delsey Rodriguez, offered no further details or facts about the false flag-attack charges.
Earlier this month, US President Donald Trump confirmed reports that he had authorized the CIA to conduct covert operations in Venezuela.
Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro has blamed false flag attacks in the past, including a plot to plant explosives at the US embassy in Caracas in early October.
The US State Department was not immediately available for comment.
Trump has carried out several strikes on boats in the Caribbean and Pacific that the administration claims are drug traffickers.
The Pentagon escalated its military buildup in the Caribbean this Friday, deploying the Gerald Ford aircraft carrier group.
