Trump’s administration has kept Badar Khan Suri, a postdoctorate at the University of Georgetown, and seeks to displace him after accusing him of ties with the Palestinian team of Hamas.
The Ministry of Interior Security (DHS) claims that Suri spreads Hamas propaganda and anti -Semitism in social media, but did not provide specific evidence to support these claims.
Suri, who lives in the US in a student visa, was arrested outside his home in Rosslyn, Virginia on Monday night and is currently taking place in Alexandria, Louisiana, waiting for the court’s date in court.
Suri’s lawyer said he was aiming for his political activism.
“If a successful scholar focusing on resolving conflict is that the government decides is bad for foreign policy, then maybe the problem is with the government, not the scholar,” the lawyer told an email.
The case has caused concerns as it comes in the midst of Trump’s wider efforts to expel people involved in pre-Palestinian protests against Israel’s actions in Gaza.
According to DHS, Suri’s alleged activities violated US immigration laws with Tricia McLaughlin, DHS assistant secretary, stating that Suri had “close connections to a well -known or suspicious terrorist who is a Hammas Senior Advisor”. However, McLaughlin did not provide evidence of the categories.
Foreign Minister Marco Rubio issued determination on March 15, 2025, stating that Suri’s activities made him disgusted under the law on immigration and nationality.
Suri, who holds a doctoral studies in Peace and Conflicts from the University of India, is a colleague at Georgetown’s Alwaleed Bin Talal Center for a Muslim-Christian understanding. He has taught a lesson about “Planetism and Rights of Minorities in South Asia” this semester.
The DHS claims that Suri’s activities made him disgust, as he allegedly spread extremist views on the internet.
However, there were no clear evidence to the public. The University of Georgetown, where the Suri worked, was surprised at her booking and said they did not know the illegal activities on his part.
Suri’s wife, Mapheze Saleh, is a US citizen and former journalist Al Jazeera from Gaza. Its background has aroused additional political interest, as it has written about the Palestinian media and has worked with the Foreign Ministry in Gaza.
This development follows the arrest of Mahmoud Khalil, another person seeking expulsion to participate in pre-Palestinian protests.
Khalil’s legal team argued that it has no links with Hamas, a group that the US considers a “foreign terrorist organization”.
Critics argue that Trump’s administration is unjustly aimed at the political activists criticizing Israel, congratulating the super-good activism with anti-Semitism. The Jewish groups that support Palestinian rights have also expressed concerns about the incorrect exploitation of their criticism of Israel as anti -Semitic.
As the case unfolds, it highlights the growing tensions between freedom of speech, political activism and national security concerns in the US.
