The United States Postal Service (USPS) has suspended the acceptance of international parcels by China and Hong Kong, effectively, without indicating when the suspension will end.
This move is expected to seriously affect the world -wide e -commerce giants such as Shein and Temu.
USPS clarified that the suspension specifically affects the parcels and will not interfere with the delivery of letters. However, the postal service did not give a specific reasoning behind the decision.
The announcement comes shortly after the signing of the executive provision of US President Donald Trump, which ended the “de minimis” exemption, a policy that had previously allowed packages of less than $ 800 to enter the US without dealing with duties or inspections.
The impact of this suspension is considered more pronounced than e -commerce companies such as Shein and Temu, which have built huge companies using the de minimis exemption. Many of these companies are based on the shipping of large volumes of low -cost products from China to US consumers.
According to Reuters, almost half of the parcels benefit from this exemption come from China, which means that the suspension could disturb billions of dollars in businesses.
Adding the growing tensions, it came into force 10% to Chinese imports on Tuesday, intensifying trade differences between the US and China.
In retaliation, China has applied its own set of invoices to US goods, including carbon, crude oil and agricultural machinery, with additional sanctions targeting US technology companies. These measures are scheduled to enter into force on 10 February.
Although USPS has not confirmed whether the suspension of parcels is linked to the new executive mandate, experts have pointed out that this move could lead to delays in the traditions of packaging, as each parcel may now undergo US inspections. and border protection.
While customs agents already have the power to inspect international packages, suspension raises concerns that the process will become significantly slower.
The suspension also coincides with increased tensions between the US and China, with the two countries opposing the other’s commercial measures.
China’s contrasting actions included the placement of two US companies – Illumina, a biotechnology company, and PVH Group, a fashion retailer – in the “unreliable list of entities”.
For the time being, USPS has not indicated when it plans to continue accepting parcels from China and Hong Kong, leaving consumers and businesses in the vacuum regarding the status of their missions.
This disorder emphasizes the extensive consequences of the ongoing trade conflict between the two global superpowers and its potential impacts on e -commerce and international shipping channels.
