US Centcom chief meets COAS Asim Munir

RAWALPINDI: US CENTCOM Commander Gen Michael “Erik” Kurilla called on Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Gen Asim Munir at the General Headquarters (GHQ), the military’s media wing said on Thursday.

The ISPR, in a statement, said Gen Kurilla acknowledged Pakistan’s achievements in the fight against terrorism, flood relief and contributions to regional peace.

The visiting dignitary laid a floral wreath at the Martyrs’ Monument in honour of the Martyrs of Pakistan whereas a smartly turned-out contingent of the Pakistan Army presented a guard of honour to the visiting dignitary.

Later, Commander CENTCOM called on COAS followed by a delegation-level meeting where matters of mutual interest, regional stability and security situation, defence and security cooperation particularly military-to-military ties were discussed during the meeting.

The delegation will also visit Torkham today (Thursday). He will be apprised of counter-terrorism and border management mechanisms in place along Pakistan-Afghanistan Border.

Last month, the US Centcom chief felicitated Gen Asim on assuming charge as the Pakistan Army Chief. Both top military officials have a previously established relationship from General Kurilla’s time as CENTCOM Chief of Staff. The two leaders also discussed US-Pakistan security cooperation efforts and strengthening the bilateral relationship.

Gen Munir assumed command of the Pakistan Army on November 29, replacing former COAS Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa.
