The US Attorney General said on Sunday that it would be a “heavy lift” for Donald Trump to find a legal way to run for a third term as president.
“I wish we could have him for 20 years as our president,” Pam Bondi said Fox News Sunday, “but I think it’s going to end, probably, after that term.”
The US Constitution was amended in 1947 to set a two -year limit in the presidency, shortly after Franklin Roosevelt died near the beginning of his fourth term in the White House.
However, constitutional modifications require approval by two -thirds of both Congress’s houses, as well as the validation of three -quarters of 50 states, which political analysts say is extremely unlikely.
“This is really the only way to do it,” Bondi said. “It would be heavy lift.”
Trump’s early discussion of searching a third term hit many as fantastic, but on March 31 the 78 -year -old president said Nbc news That is not “joking” for the possibility.
He said there were “methods” that would allow it to happen.
The observations of Bondi, a former Florida Attorney General, about the difficulty of a legal third term appear to be aligned with the views of most constitutional scholars.
But as a confirmed believer of Trump who holds the top government law enforcement office, her comments are more important.
Earlier in the interview with Fox Shannon Bream, Bondi, spoke against the widespread legal impulse faced by the Trump administration as he moves aggressively to put his policies into force.
“We had over 170 lawsuits that brought against us – this should be the constitutional crisis there,” he said. “We will continue to fight” these cases as they move through the courts.
Bondi defended the administration’s decision to pursue the death penalty in the case of Luigi Mangione, who is accused of killing December 4, 2024 at a New York Health Insurance CEO Brian Thompson.
“The president’s directive was very clear: we have to look for the death penalty when possible,” he said. “If there was ever a case of death, that’s one.”
Bondi ruled out in a recent legal victory, when the Supreme Court on Friday resembled administration in a dispute over the transition of the Department of Education to freeze the so-called Dei grants-which concerns efforts to ensure diversity, justice and integration.
The right -wing court allowed the administration to continue to freeze $ 64 million for the training of teachers and professional development.
“We just got a big win,” Bondi said, “and we will continue to fight everyday.”
