Unrelenting winter storms are starting to punish the severe weather week in the US

A stronger winter storm is expected to follow through midweek, bringing snow, ice, winds, tornadoes and flooding

A winter storm ripped through the mid-Atlantic and Northeast on Saturday, with a stronger one expected Sunday that could bring up to a foot of snow and possible travel disruptions for millions under winter storm warnings. CNN mentionted.

Freezing rain and heavy snow fell across the mid-Atlantic interior, including Virginia and North Carolina, making driving hazardous, while heavy snowfall reached the Northeast late Saturday morning.

Central Pennsylvania received several inches of snow that later worsened road conditions, with Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (DOT) maps showing widespread road delays.

Pennsylvania transportation crews began preparing roads for those conditions Friday to “keep roads passable, not completely free of ice and snow,” a statement from the Pennsylvania DOT said.

Meanwhile, a stronger storm is expected to follow the first storm by midweek, bringing snow, ice, strong winds, tornadoes and flooding.

It will strengthen quickly on Monday as it moves through the central US towards the Great Lakes.

The storm’s track remains uncertain, but heavy snowfall is likely across parts of the Plains, Great Lakes, Midwest, and interior Northeast, with changes in snow chances.

In addition, Chicago and Milwaukee could see snow as a storm pulls in warmer, moist air from the Gulf of Mexico.

It increases the risk of severe storms, damaging winds and flooding near the Gulf Coast, particularly in the southern Southeast, including Florida, on Monday and Tuesday.

As the storm moves northeast, it will bring rain and gusty winds of 40 mph or greater to the eastern half of the US, causing severe flooding and power outage concerns.

The Weather Forecast Center has placed an area between Philadelphia and New York, including Trenton, New Jersey, at a level 3 out of 4 flood risk, indicating rare confidence in a high-impact flood event.
