Ukraine, Russia escalate war with large strikes before peace talks

Ukraine, Russia escalate war with large strikes before peace talks
Listen to the article

On the eve of the peace talks, Ukraine and Russia rose sharply with one of the biggest battles of their conflict, a Russian motorway bridge blasting over a passenger train and an ambitious attack on bombers.

After days of uncertainty about whether or not Ukraine will attend, President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said that Defense Minister Rustem Umerov would sit with Russian officials in the second round of immediate peace talks in Constantinople on Monday.

The first round of talks a week ago gave the biggest exchange of prisoners of war – but no sense of consensus on how to stop battles.

In the midst of a speech on peace, there was a lot of war.

At least seven people were killed and injured 69 when a motorway bridge in the Bryansk area of Russia, neighboring Ukraine, was blown up over a passenger train heading to Moscow with 388 people on board. No one has yet to take responsibility.

Ukraine attacked Russian nuclear bombers on a military base deep in Siberia on Sunday, a Ukrainian intelligence official said, the first such attack so far from the first lines over 4,300 km (2,670 miles) away.

The official said the operation included hiding explosive bodies in the roofs of wooden sheds and loading them on trucks led to the perimeter of air bases.

In total, 41 Russian warplanes were hit, the official said.

Russia recognizes the attacks of the air base, says the fires that have been set =

Ukraine did not tell Trump’s administration about the attack in advance, Axios Barak Ravid reported on X, citing an anonymous Ukrainian official.

The Russian Ministry of Defense acknowledged in the application of telegraph messages that Ukraine had begun strikes with Russian military airports in five areas on Sunday.

He said the attacks repelled attacks in all except two areas – Murmansk in the north and Irkutsk in Siberia – where “the launch of drones FPVs from an area nearby the airports resulted in many aircraft catching fire”.

The fires extinguish without loss. Some people involved in the attacks had been held, the ministry said.

Russia launched 472 aircraft in Ukraine at night, said the Ukrainian Air Force, the highest night of the war so far. Russia had also begun seven rockets, the Air Force said.

Russia said it had progressed deeper into the Sumy region of Ukraine, and the pre-Ukrainian open source maps showed that Russia took 450 square kilometers of Ukraine land in May, the fastest monthly progress in at least six months.

US President Donald Trump has asked Russia and Ukraine to make peace and is threatened to walk away if they do not – possibly promote responsibility to support Ukraine on the shoulders of European forces – which have much less cash and much smaller than the United States.

According to Trump’s envoy Keith Kellogg, the two sides in Turkey will present the corresponding documents describing their ideas for peace, although it is clear that after three years of intense war, Moscow and Kiev remain far away.

Putin ordered tens of thousands of troops to invade Ukraine in February 2022 after eight years of battle in eastern Ukraine among Russian candidates and Ukrainian troops. The United States says over 1.2 million people were killed and injured in war in 2022.

Trump called Putin “crazy” and violates Zelenskiy to the public at the Oval Office, but the US President has also said that he believes that peace is possible and that if Putin is delayed then he could impose harsh sanctions on Russia.

In June last year, Putin began his initial terms for a direct end to the war: Ukraine must abandon his ambitions to NATO and withdraw all his troops from the whole territory of the four Ukrainian areas that claim and mainly control.

Ukrainian negotiators in Istanbul will present to the Russian side a proposed march map to achieve a constant peace settlement, according to a copy of the document reported by Reuters.

According to the document, there will be no restrictions on Ukraine’s military force after a peace agreement, there is no international recognition of Russian sovereignty in parts of Ukraine obtained by Moscow forces and compensation for Ukraine.

The document also stated that the current position of the first line would be the starting point for negotiations on the territory.

Russia currently controls just below one fifth of Ukraine, or about 113,100 square kilometers, about the same size as the US state of Ohio.
