United Nations: Britain, France and Germany are pushing Iran to receive an agreement that would keep new United Nations sanctions.
The three European forces have stated that the offer gives Tehran more time for talks on its nuclear program, but only if it allows inspectors and facilitates Western fears of uranium stocks.
United Nations envoys for the three countries-known as E3-issued a joint statement before a meeting of the Security Council closed door, the day after the start of a 30-day process to redefine UN sanctions for Iran through the disputed nuclear program.
The E3 offered to delay the rehabilitation of sanctions – known as Snapback – for up to six months if Iran restored access to nuclear inspectors, faced concerns about the stock of the enriched uranium and participated in talks with the United States.
“Our applications were fair and realistic,” said British ambassador Barbara Woodward, who read the statement. “However, today, Iran has shown no indication that it is serious to meet them.”
“We urge Iran to review this position, reach an agreement based on our contribution and to help create the space for a diplomatic solution on this issue in the long run,” she said, with its German and French counterparts standing by her.
In response, Iran’s UK ambassador Amir Saeid Iravani said the E3 offer was “full of unrealistic conditions”.
“They are demanding conditions that should be the result of the negotiations, not the starting point, and they know that these demands cannot be met,” he told reporters.
Iravani said the E3 would have to return “a brief, unconditional technical expansion of 2231”, which is guaranteed by a 2015 nuclear agreement raised by the United Nations and Western sanctions in Iran in return for Curbs in its nuclear program.
Sino-Russian plan
Russia and China have proposed a UN Security Council decision that would extend the 2015 agreement for six months and encourage all parties to continue negotiations immediately. But they have not yet requested a vote.
The couple, Iran’s strategic allies, have removed the controversial language from the plan – which initially proposed on Sunday – which would prevent E3 from the UN sanctions on Iran.
Iravani described the Russian and Chinese vote plan as a practical step to give diplomacy more time. A resolution needs at least nine votes in favor and without veto from the US, France, Britain, China or Russia.
UN nuclear inspectors have returned to Iran for the first time since it suspended cooperation with them after June attacks on its nuclear sites by Israel and the United States. However, Iran has not yet reached an agreement on how to repeat full work with the International Atomic Energy Organization.
