In an effort “to protect the health of future generations”, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has announced that it will make premarital genetic testing mandatory for all Emirati couples from January 2025, The News reported on Thursday, citing the agency. Gulf country’s WAM news.
In order to prevent genetic diseases and improve public health, the Ministry of Health and Prevention (MoHAP) is leading this program with the help of the Ministry of Health in Abu Dhabi, Dubai Health Authority, Emirates Health Services and Dubai Health .
During the annual meetings of the UAE government, the program was recently approved following a decision by the Emirates Genome Council.
The trial, which began as a pilot project in Abu Dhabi in 2022, tested more than 800 couples. The results showed that 86% of the couples were genetically compatible, while 14% required additional family planning measures.
The program is designed to identify genetic risks early, allowing couples to make informed decisions about starting a family.
The tests cover 570 genes linked to more than 840 medical conditions. By detecting potential genetic mutations, healthcare providers can reduce the prevalence of chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes, contributing to better long-term health outcomes.
According to the MoHAP, the strategy aims to create a comprehensive national genetic database that will help proactively identify genetic diseases among Emiratis, facilitating early medical intervention.
The MoHAP emphasized that this decision will lead to a transformative change in the healthcare sector, using future technologies to ensure sustainable development and improved quality of life, in line with the UAE’s Centennial Vision 2071.
