In a shocking development, all Turkish football leagues have been suspended following a horrific incident where Halil Umut Meler, a prominent Turkish referee, was physically assaulted by MKE Ankaragucu president Faruk Koca.

The attack occurred on Monday when Koca ran onto the pitch in response to his side conceding a last-minute equalizer in a Super Lig match against Caykur Rizespor.

“Matches in all leagues have been postponed indefinitely,” the Turkish Football Federation announced. [TFF] president Mehmet Buyukeksi during a press conference, calling the incident a “night of shame for Turkish football”.

FIFA president Gianni Infantino condemned the violence, saying: “Without match referees, there is no football.” He stressed the need for safety in the sport, urging the authorities to enforce and respect safety measures at all levels.

The effects of the attack were severe, as Meler, a respected 37-year-old referee, suffered multiple blows and injuries, including a small fracture. The chaos extended beyond the attack, leading to clashes between players and club officials.

Faruk Koca, after treatment in hospital, is to face detention proceedings, according to Turkey’s Interior Minister Ali Gerlikaya, who strongly condemned the incident. Several others involved in the attack have been arrested.

Meller, known for refereeing international matches for FIFA and being on UEFA’s elite list of referees, is receiving medical treatment for his injuries.

Dr Mehmet Yorubulut, the head doctor at the hospital treating Meler, assured that there is currently no life-threatening condition, with the referee expected to be discharged after further tests in the morning.

The attack prompted President Recep Tayyip Erdogan – a one-time footballer whose love of the game helped bolster Turkey’s top clubs – to make a late-night phone call to defuse the situation.

“Sport means peace and brotherhood. Sport is incompatible with violence,” he said in a statement on social media.
