Trump’s administration is moving to tighten the duration of visas for students, media

Trump’s administration aims to tighten the duration of visas for students, cultural exchanges and media members, according to a proposed government regulation issued on Wednesday, part of a wider suppression of legal immigration.

US President Donald Trump, a Republican, launched a widespread suppression of immigration after taking over his duties in January.

The latest move would create new obstacles for international students, exchange workers and foreign journalists who should apply to expand their stay in the US instead of maintaining a more flexible legal regime.

The proposed regulation would create a specified period of time for f vistions for international students, J’s visas that allow visitors to cultural exchange programs to work in the US and I consider visas for media members.

These visas are currently available for the duration of the program or US -based employment.
There were about 1.6 million international students for F visits in the US in 2024, according to US government data.

The United States has given about 355,000 exchange visitors and 13,000 members of the media in the financial year 2024, which began on October 1, 2023.

The visa for journalists – who can last today – would be up to 240 days or, in the case of people with passports from China and Hong Kong, 90 days. Visa holders could apply for extensions, the proposal said.

Trump’s administration told the proposed regulation that the change was necessary for the better “monitoring and supervision” of visa holders while in the United States.

The public will have 30 days to comment on the measure, which reflects a proposal proposed in 2020 at the end of Trump’s first term.

Nafsa, a non -profit organization that represents international teachers in more than 4,300 institutions worldwide, opposed the 2020 proposal and called on Trump’s administration to abolish it. The democratic administration of then President Joe Biden withdrew her in 2021.

Trump’s administration has increased the control of legal immigration, the revocation of student visas and green cards of university students on their ideological views and the stripping of the legal status by hundreds of thousands of immigrants.

In a note on August 22, US citizenship and immigration services said they would continue to be long -term visits to the neighborhoods of applicants to check what is called accommodation, moral character and commitment to American ideals.
