Trump tells us, India is still negotiating after 25% US pricing threat

  • Trump to impose a penalty on India over Russian transactions, BRICS.
  • The new invoices threaten trade talks, the partnership against China.
  • Trump imposes 50% invoices on certain copper imports.

President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that the United States is still negotiating with India for trade after the announcement earlier on the day the US will impose a 25% invoice on the goods introduced from the country starting on Friday.

The 25%invoice, as well as an indefinite penalty announced by Trump in a morning social position of the media, would give relations with the most populous democracy in the world.

Later in the White House, the Republican president said there was a mosquito hall.

“They have one of the highest invoices in the world now, they are willing to cut it very essentially,” Trump told reporters. “We’re talking now in India – we’ll see what happens … You’ll know by the end of this week.”

The 25% would make India more seriously than other major commercial partners and threatened to unfold months of talks between the two countries, undermining a Washington strategic partner and offsetting China.

What would be the penalty was not clear. Trump initially said it was for India to buy Russian weapons and oil, and its non -financial obstacles.

When asked about the White House penalty, he said it was partly due to commercial issues and partly because of India’s participation in the BRICS group of developing nations, which he described as hostile to the US Trump in July, he said the US would impose an additional 10% invoice.

India’s announcement came as countries face a Friday deadline to reach agreements on mutual invoices or have an invoice imposed by Trump slapped on them. Trump signed a declaration on Wednesday that orders 50% invoices to certain copper imports, citing national security, the White House said.

First warnings

The White House had previously warned India about its high average applied prices – almost 39% in agricultural products, with rates rising to 45% in vegetable oils and about 50% of apples and corn.

“While India is our friend, we have, over the years, to do relatively small businesses with them because their invoices are too high, among the highest in the world and have the most laborious and unpleasant non -brokers of any country,” Trump writes in a social position.

“They have always bought an overwhelming majority of their military equipment from Russia and is Russia’s largest energy buyer, along with China, at a time when everyone wants Russia to stop the murder in Ukraine – all is not well!”

Responding to the social status of truth, the Indian government said it is considering the consequences of Trump’s announcements and remained committed to securing a fair trade agreement with the US

“India and the US have been involved in negotiations to conclude a fair, balanced and mutually beneficial bilateral trade agreement in recent months. We remain committed to this goal,” he said.

Russia continued to be the leading oil supplier in India during the first six months of 2025, accounting for 35% of total supplies.

The United States, the largest economy in the world, currently has a $ 45.7 billion deficit with India, the fifth largest.

White House financial adviser, Kevin Hassett, said Trump was frustrated by the progress of trade talks with India and believed that the 25% price announcement would help the situation.

The new US tax on imports from India would be higher than in many other countries that recently hit the Trump administration agreements. The Vietnam invoice is set at 20%and Indonesia at 19%, while the contribution to Japan and the European Union is 15%.

“This is an important failure for Indian exporters, especially in areas such as textiles, footwear and furniture, as the 25% invoice will make them not competitive against opponents from Vietnam and China,” said SC Ralhan, president of the Federation.

Challenge

Americans and Indian negotiators have held many rounds of discussions about resolving controversial issues, in particular for market access to India for US agricultural and dairy products.

In its latest statement, India said it has offered the highest importance for protecting and promoting the well -being of farmers, businessmen and small businesses.

“The government will take all necessary steps to secure our national interest, as has been the case with other trade agreements,” he said.

The regression comes despite previous commitments by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Trump to complete the first phase of a trade agreement from autumn and expand bilateral trade to $ 500 billion by 2030, from $ 191 billion in $ 2024.

Since India’s brief but deadly conflict with Pakistan’s opponent in South Asia, New Delhi was unhappy with Trump’s closeness to Islamabad and protested, which has overshadowed commercial talks.

“Politically, the relationship is at its most difficult point since the mid -1990s,” said Ashok Malik, a partner at The Asia Group. “Confidence has been reduced.” President Trump’s messages have been damaged by many years of careful, bilateral cultivation of the US-India corporate relationship in both capitals. “

In addition to accessing agricultural products, the US had pointed out concerns about the increasingly invented quality of import requirements, among its many non -tariff barriers abroad, in a report published in March.

The new invoices will affect the exports of Indian goods to the US, estimated at about $ 87 billion in $ 2024, including labor volume products such as garments, medicinal products, gemstones and jewelry and petrochemicals.
