- Trump hopes for successful US-India trade agreement.
- Modi also invites us to India close friends, partners.
- Trump previously imposed 50% invoices on Indian goods.
US President Donald Trump said his administration is continuing negotiations to tackle trade barriers with India and that he will speak with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, increasing hopes of agreement after weeks of disagreement.
Trump, in a remarkable shift in the tone, said he was looking forward to talking to Modi in the “coming weeks” and expressed optimism that they could complete a trade agreement.
“I feel confident that there will be no difficulty coming up with a successful conclusion for both of our big countries,” he said in a social media position.
Modi responded to optimism in a social media position on Wednesday, saying that Washington and New Delhi “are close friends and natural partners”.
He said the teams from both countries are working to complete trade discussions at the earliest.
“I am also looking forward to talking to President Trump. We will work together to secure a brighter, more prosperous future for both of our people,” Modi said.
Trump last week said India had offered to reduce its invoices to US goods to zero, adding that the proposal was delayed and the country of South Asia should reduce its duties years ago.
The most optimistic message of the US President came after months of roller-coaster talks that have stretched US-India ties.
India’s head of financial adviser this week warned that Trump’s 50% invoices imposed on Indian exports in the US could shave half a percentage of India’s gross domestic product this year.
Trump had promised for months that the two sides were close to depending on a trade agreement, only to double the new tariffs on Indian imports to 50%, raising questions about the future of the US-India relationship, which had been reinforced in recent years, including Trump’s first term.
Trump imposed the highest invoices in India after New Delhi refused to stop buying Russian oil as opposed to its efforts to end the Moscow war in Ukraine.
The Financial Times reported on Tuesday that Trump is pushing the European Union to impose 100% duties on imports from India and China.
The US-Indian two-way trade trade amounted to $ 129 billion in 2024, with a US $ 45.8 billion trade deficit, according to US Census Bureau data.
