Thousands of protesters gathered in Washington, DC, and in the US on Saturday, part of about 1,200 demonstrations expected to form the largest day of protest against President Donald Trump and billionaire Ally Elon Musk since they started a rapid fire.
People flow to the extent of the grass around the Washington monument under a gloomy sky and light rain. The organizers told Reuters that more than 20,000 people are expected to watch a rally at the National Mall.
About 150 groups of activists were registered to participate, according to the event website. The protests were designed in all 50 states plus Canada and Mexico.
Terry Klein, a retired biomedical scientist from Princeton, New Jersey, was among those who gathered from the stage under the Washington monument.
He said he was driving down to attend the rally to protest Trump’s policies for “everything, from immigration to the Doge Stuff in invoices this week, in education.
The crowd around the monument continued to build all day. Some carry Ukrainian flags, and others wore Palestinian Keffiyeh scarves and brought signs of “free Palestine”, while the Democrats from the House of Representatives of the US threw Trump’s policies on stage.
Wayne Hoffman, 73, a retired money manager from West Cape May, New Jersey, said he is worried about Trump’s economic policies, including the widespread use of invoices.
“It will cost the farmers in the red states. It will cost people their jobs – surely their 401k, people have lost tens of thousands of dollars,” Hoffman said.
Kyle, a 20 -year -old Ohio employee, was a solitary supporter of Trump, fighting for a “Make America Great Again” hat and walking the margin of Washington, DC, fight, while dealing with protesters in the debate.
“Most people are not very hostile, some people Cuss,” said Kyle, who refused to give his surname.
Trump, who shocked financial markets and upset nations around the world with a series of commercial invoices this week, spent the day in Florida, playing a round of golf at his club in Jupiter before returning to the Mar-A-Lago Union in the afternoon.
Sue-Ann Friedman, 84, joined her home in Stamford, Connecticut. It brought a glittering pink, a handmade sign that opposes the management’s movements to reduce funding for medical research, which said it had influenced the research that her son is conducting in infectious diseases at a university.
“I thought the days of my march are over and then we are taking someone like Musk and Trump,” Friedman said.
Paul Kretschmann, a 74 -year -old retired lawyer at Stamford, said it was the first time he had ever watched a protest.
“My concern is that social security is going to be exhausted, that we will lose our benefits and that there will be no one around to manage it in the first place,” he said. “I am afraid that this is part of a larger plan to disassemble the government and for Trump to maintain power.”
Doge under fire
With Trump’s blessing, the Musk government’s efficiency team has been destroyed through the US government, eliminating more than 200,000 jobs from the 2.3 million federal workforce. At times, the effort was accidental and forced the necessary specialists to revoke.
On Friday, the internal revenue service began to dismiss more than 20,000 workers, as 25% of its classes.
Hundreds of people gathered outside the headquarters of the Social Security Service, a leading Doge target, near Baltimore to protest against cuts in the organization that offers benefits to the elderly and with disabilities.
Linda Falcao, who turns 65 in two months, told the crowd that she is paying the Social Security Fund from the age of 16.
“I’m terrified, I’m angry, I’m crazy, I’m confused that this could happen in the United States,” he said. “I love America and I’m sad. I need my money. I want my money. I want my benefits!” The crowd chants: “It’s our money!”
White House Assistant Liz Huston questioned the category of protesters that Trump intended to reduce social security and Medicaid.
“The position of President Trump is clear: it will always protect social security, Medicare and Medicaid for eligible beneficiaries. In the meantime, the attitude of Democrats gives social security, Medicaid and Medicare benefits to illegal aliens, who will bankrupt these programs and will be gone by the US.” to an email.
Much of Trump’s agenda was restrained by lawsuits that have argued that he has overcome his power with efforts to shoot civil servants, immigrants who are expelled and the reverse rights of transsexuals.
Trump returned to the office on January 20th with a flow of executive commands and other measures that critics say aligned with an agenda described by Project 2025, a deep conservative political initiative to reform the government and the establishment of the Presidential Power. Its supporters have applauded Trump’s boldness, as it is necessary to disrupt the established liberal interests.
A few hours before the protests had to start in the United States, hundreds of American anti-Trumps living in Europe gathered in Berlin, Frankfurt, Paris and London to express their opposition to the sweeping makeover by foreign and domestic policies.
