LAHORE:
Welcoming the government’s latest agricultural initiative, the Pakistan Business Forum (PBF) lauded the prime minister’s decision to procure wheat in the coming growing season, calling the timely move a crucial financial relief to farmers and a much-needed boost to the agriculture sector.
Speaking to the media, PBF chief organizer Ahmad Jawad said that under the recently announced Wheat Procurement Policy 2025-26, the federal and provincial governments plan to purchase 6.2 million tonnes of wheat. He stressed that the policy will directly benefit farmers, especially in light of the severe economic setbacks caused by the recent floods, which caused more than 430 billion rupees worth of damage to the rural economy.
“This policy brings a ray of hope to farmers across the country. By ensuring timely supply and financial liquidity before the sowing season, it enables growers to plan effectively for the coming year,” Jawad said while briefing the media.
The PBF urged the government to go a step further by introducing a comprehensive support package to help meet national wheat production targets. This proposed package involves the joint provision of two bags of urea and one bag of diammonium phosphate (DAP) fertilizer per farmer by both the federal and provincial authorities. According to the forum, such measures will help reduce production costs and enable farmers to complete sowing on time.
Highlighting the financial pressures the farming community is currently facing, Jawad emphasized on urgent government intervention. “If the government succeeds in meeting the wheat procurement target, it will not only boost the agricultural sector but also revive financial activity in rural areas, where the economy is largely driven by wheat cultivation,” he said.
