Rumeysa Ozturk, a Turkish doctoral student at Tufts University in Somerville, Massachusetts, puts on her family licenses and received the Reuters family on March 29, 2025.

May 9 (Reuters) – a federal judge ordered Trump’s administration on Friday to immediately release a student at Tufts University from Turkey, who was held for more than six weeks at a Louisiana immigration detention facility after a Louisiana detention facility.

US Judge William Sessions during a hearing in Burlington, Vermond, a guarantee of Rumeysa Ozturk, who is at the heart of one of the highest profile cases to come from Republican President Donald Trump’s campaign for the US.

The judge said Ozturk had put a substantial allegation that the only reason he was held was “simply and clearly the expression he made or shared at OP-ED in violation of the rights of the first amendment”.

“Her ongoing detention may be spreading the speech of millions of and millions of people in this country who are not citizens,” sessions said. “Any of them can now avoid exercising the rights of the first amendment to fear that it will be removed from a detention center.”

After listening, Ozturk, who appeared before the judge by the Louisiana detention unit, could be considered to embrace one of its lawyers. Tufts said she plans to help provide Ozturk homes during her release.

The judge decided shortly after being rejected by a federal appeal, the New Tab opens the offer of Trump’s administration for the review of Columbia University student Mohsen Mahdawi, a Palestinian university activist who also ordered a different judge in Vermond.

Ozturk’s arrest on March 25th by covers, law enforcement officers on a road in the suburb of Boston of Somerville, Massachusetts, near her home were recorded in viral videos and happened after the recall of her student visa.

The principles of the unique basis gave the revocation of the visa was a part of an opinion that co-author of the Tufts student newspaper criticizes the school’s response to students’ calls to assign companies with ties with Israel and to “recognize the Palestinian genocide”.

Her lawyers in the US Association of Civil Liberties had argued that her arrest and detention were illegally designed to punish her for a speech protected by the first amendment of the US Constitution and to relax the speech of others.

The 30 -year -old PhD student and the Fulbright scholar was transferred to a detention center in Basile, Louisiana, although her lawyer filed a lawsuit to Massachusetts on the day she was arrested and a judge there prevented from moving from the state without warning 48 hours.

By the time the mandate went down, US immigration and customs enforcement had already transferred to Vermond, where it was held soon before flying to Louisiana.
Instead of rejecting her case, as the administration wanted, a Massachusetts judge transferred the case to Vermond, saying that he could sound properly there.

Sessions, appointed by Democratic President Barack Obama, then ordered Ozturk to be transferred to Vermond so that it can be available as it weighs to order its liberation and consider the “important constitutional concerns”.

A Federal Court of Appeal on Wednesday ordered to be transferred to Vermond until May 14, but the sessions chose to go on a hearing with a guarantee previously scheduled to proceed on Friday and allow Ozturk to appear remotely.

Such an asthma attack in the middle of Friday’s hearing. He told the judge that he had suffered about twelve while being detained, more than at any time in the last two years, which he accused of “provocative” conditions of limiting it to an overly full space with bad air ventilation.

“Duration and frequency have increased due to both the fixed activators that surround me and the stressful environment they are living in now,” he said.
