The United Arab Emirates has announced plans to introduce a new digital recognition system that will eliminate the need for natural Emirates ID cards, marking a significant step in the country’s digital transformation agenda.
According to Khaleej’s time, the service that is going to be fully developed within next year, the system will use facial recognition and biometric technologies to allow safe access to government and private services throughout the nation. Developed in collaboration with strategic partners, the system will be accessible through a smart application and complement the existing identity infrastructure.
According to a statement issued by the competent authority in response to a question raised during a meeting of the Federal National Council (FNC), the initiative is designed to enhance safety, improving accuracy and rationalization of services.
The biometric identity platform is scheduled for adoption in multiple high security sectors, including government services, banking, telecommunications, health care, insurance and hospitality, where accurate and safe recognition is necessary.
The Authority emphasized that the solution complies with national data protection laws and risk management protocols, ensuring both technical and procedural integrity. He also noted that the transition to a digital identifier takes place in gradual stages, starting with the digitization of simple services, followed by the integration of more complex platforms.
“Digital identity is not just a tool – it is a gateway to better services, stronger security and greater convenience for everyone,” the Authority said.
The Biometric ID initiative is part of a broader strategic framework presented in August 2024 as part of the “governmental plan for bureaucracy”. One key element of this plan was the “month of the elimination of government bureaucracy”, which aimed to engage both government officials and the public to identify and eliminate ineffective services.
The events took place in all Emirates, including Community Councils, Shopping Centers and Service Centers, to collect citizens’ feedback and innovation. To further enhance the change, the Authority began the bureaucracy award, open to employees, users and partners, inviting ideas that rationalize the processes and enhance the effectiveness of the services.
By placing himself as a global leader in smart governance, the UAE aims to simplify life for citizens, residents and visitors by providing uninterrupted and safe digital services. By incorporating biometric identity into the forefront, the country reinforces its long -term vision for providing a transparent, effective and central governance of citizens.
