Karachi: Market data show that despite the government it has covered the retail price of sugar in RS164 per kilogram, shopkeepers in various parts of the country are still selling the product far beyond the official price, ignoring government orders.
In some areas, sugar was sold for up to RS180 one kilogram during the week ending April 24, 2025, according to the latest Sensitive Price Indimator (SPI) report published by the Pakistan Statistics Office (PBS) on Friday.
The lowest recorded pricing, RS164 per kilo, was on the ceiling of prices, while the average national price was RS168.12 per kilo.
According to PBS city data, sugar prices vary throughout the country, with the highest price being recorded in RS180 per kilo in Peshawar. Other cities where sugar sold above the official ceiling of the Government of RS164 per kilo included Rawalpindi, where prices were up to RS175 per kilo and karachi, where the maximum price also reached RS175/kg.
In Lahore, prices ranged between RS164 and RS170 per kilo, while in Hyderabad, the average value of sugar was RS166.65 per kg. In cities such as Islamabad, Gujranwala and Sialkot, prices remained in RS170 per kilo. Meanwhile, some cities, including Sargodha and Quetta, have recorded prices according to the government’s ceiling in RS164 per kilo.
The federal government had earlier announced the ceiling of prices in an effort to limit inflationary pressure to basic foods in Ramadan. In March, Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar said retail sugar prices should not exceed RS164, following a warning by the Pakistani Competition Committee (CCP) against Sugar Mills.
