KARACHI:
Water and Power Development Authority (Wapda) Chairman Lt. Gen. (Retd) Muhammad Saeed, during a two-day visit, reviewed construction progress at key locations of the Greater Karachi Bulk Water Supply Scheme (K-IV project) being constructed by Wapda on behalf of the federal government to meet the water needs of Pakistan’s largest city.
Key work sites visited by the president included the intake structure and pumping stations at Keenjhar Lake in Thatta district, the water transfer system including high pressure pipelines from Keenjhar Lake in Karachi and one of the filtration plants in Karachi.
The general manager and project manager along with contractors and consultants briefed the president on the progress of the contract, key objectives and their completion schedules. The K-IV project has been divided into eight contract packages for its completion on a fast track basis. Construction work is currently underway on all key areas of these packages. The overall physical progress on the project is 64% with an expenditure of Rs 86 billion.
“Wapda is committed to complete K-IV during 2026, subject to availability of matching funds,” a press statement said. The update also included the current financial situation and funding requirements in the coming days.
The president, while stressing the importance of the project for Karachi, urged the contractors to speed up the pace of work by using additional resources to match the schedules. The contractor working on pipeline-2, in particular, must meet the construction schedule for the respective contract package.
The chairman instructed the project team to work closely with the Sindh government for the smooth implementation of the programme.
