- The prime minister says regulatory duties must be abolished in 4-5 years.
- Premier says this decision to keep inflation under control.
- The number of tasks was reduced to four, Premier says.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday presented significant pricing reforms, covering customs task at a maximum of 15%.
Chairing a meeting on national tariff policy, Prime Minister Shehbaz said additional customs and regulatory duties will be gradually abolished in the next four to five years.
“This move is considered an important milestone to the economic improvement that will allow export growth. This decision is expected not only to help control unemployment but also to maintain inflation under control,” the prime minister said.
He argued that he would also encourage international investment and help create new employment opportunities.
The prime minister called on additional customs duties (currently ranging from 2% to 7%) and the regulatory task (currently ranging from 5% to 90%) to be eliminated in the next four to five years.
Similarly, the customs task will be covered by a maximum of 15%, as currently, for some data, the percentage exceeds 100%, read a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s office.
The number of duty plates has also been reduced to four to facilitate the legal complexity associated with imports and to provide equal competition to various industries.
Prime Minister Shehbaz reiterated that his government has pledged to develop a strong economy, create employment opportunities and remove inflation.
He said that after thorough consultations with national and international economic experts, a comprehensive plan for fundamental economic reforms had been formulated and the decision to reduce duties was also part of these reforms.
The prime minister’s “historic decision” will open the economy to foreign investment and ensure that domestic industries have easy and affordable access to raw materials, intermediate goods and capital equipment, to read the statement.
In addition, increased competitiveness will allow local industries to become more effective and competitive to help control inflation and stabilize the national currency.
The prime minister argued that the reduction in invoices would help stabilize the current account deficit and would help collect higher revenue and also set up an implementation committee on the issue.
